When should my child visit a dentist?

Start as early as age 1! It’s recommended that children visit the dentist when the first tooth appears or by their first birthday. Early visits help introduce your child to the dental environment, establish a relationship with Dr. Peeyush Ranjan, and build good dental habits for a healthy future.
It’s normal to feel anxious about your child’s first dental visit. At Tooth Pals Pediatric Dentistry, we specialize in working with children to make them feel comfortable. Our team collaborates with parents to ensure a smooth experience. Don’t hesitate to call us to discuss what to expect at your child’s first visit!
Pediatric dentists undergo 2-3 years of additional training focused on the unique needs of infants, children, and adolescents, including those with special needs. At Tooth Pals Pediatric Dentistry, our environment is specifically designed to be child-friendly, creating a positive and stress-free experience for your child.
Begin brushing as soon as the first tooth arrives, using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Introduce a fluoride toothpaste in the size of a grain of rice to minimize the risk of tooth decay. Establishing a good routine from the start is crucial.
According to the Canadian Dental Association, fluoride toothpaste is recommended from as early as age 1. Use only a rice grain-sized amount of toothpaste to help protect your child’s teeth.
Tooth grinding is common in children and usually occurs as new teeth emerge. While it may be concerning to hear, most children outgrow this habit. Using a mouthguard at this age can be challenging due to their rapidly changing mouths.
Baby teeth are essential for chewing, speaking, and smiling. They also guide the placement of permanent teeth. Since some baby teeth remain until 12-13 years old, maintaining their health is critical to prevent discomfort and support proper dental development.
Dental emergencies include knocked-out or shifted teeth, cracked teeth from trauma, or severe swelling in the face, mouth, or jaw. If your child experiences any of these symptoms, please contact us immediately. An emergency room visit may be necessary.
It’s common for infants to use a pacifier or thumb for self-soothing. Dr. Peeyush Ranjan suggests encouraging children to break this habit by age 3 to prevent impact on dental alignment and growth. We offer support and strategies for habit breaking.
Absolutely! We encourage parents to accompany their children during visits to foster a positive experience. Please note that due to current health guidelines, masks and limited entry may be required.
We recommend that children visit the dentist every six months for routine check-ups. These visits are key in detecting and managing oral health issues early. Dr. Peeyush Ranjan may suggest more frequent visits depending on your child’s specific needs.

Flossing should start as soon as two adjacent teeth touch. Daily flossing helps prevent cavities between teeth.

Dental sealants are a protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (usually the molars), which are more prone to decay. They are an effective preventive measure against tooth decay and are designed to blend in, being tooth-coloured.

Yes, children participating in any sports should wear a mouthguard to prevent dental injuries. We offer a variety of mouthguards and can help choose the best one to protect your child’s smile.
